Intercultural Design: Final Project
JUMPLINK
INSTRUCTION
By utilizing the data we collected in Japan, as a result, students should produce a visual design outcome that reflect students interpretation and definition of 'Framing', bearing in mind to consider cultural and aesthetic aspect.

PROCESS
1. RESEARCH & SKETCHES
While in Japan, my group decided to make one set of kanzashi that represents three different prefectures in Japan. They are Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara. In the fifth week, our group discussed as a result, we decided to divide our group into 3 smaller groups based on the Osaka Prefecture to make a design for the kanzashi.
- Osaka - Tsumami Kanzashi: Ying Ying & Velicia.
- Kyoto - Hana/Bira-bira Kanzashi: Emily & Tao Yuze.
- Nara - Kushi: Aisya & Lizzie.
After dividing our group, I started to sketch the kushi. I did some research about kushi and looked for references on the internet. I decided to make kushi that has a similar shape to Yanagawa kushi. Yanagawa kushi itself is a small comb that is made from ivory dyed red and carved to make white patterns. This kushi was popular during the Koka era. I found this information from a Tumblr post here. For the decoration, as I'm doing the Kanzashi for Nara, I designed the Kanzashi with the deer illustration and cherry blossom tree. I showed my design to Lizzie, and then we finalized it together to get feedback from Mr. Asrizal.

When we showed our design to Mr. Asrizal, he said that our design was too obvious. He suggested we make something more minimalist and it doesn't have to be a kushi, he added that we should show our purpose why we want to make kanzashi as a final product for our design. Our purpose is to show that culture should be protected, we recognized that in this era, people barely wore kanzashi daily and started wearing other accessories. After getting feedback from Mr. Asrizal, me and Lizzie met up to make a new design for our project. As a result, we decided to make a claw clip. The reason why we chose to make a claw clip is that the claw clip itself has a similar shape to kanzashi and the claw clip is a common accessory that is worn by everyone nowadays. This is our final sketch for the kanzashi.

Design Explanation:
- Shape: The shape of the claw clip resembles the shape of a kushi. Kushi itself used to be a daily accessory. This accessory is often used in conjunction with hana kanzashi, kushi means 'comb' and it is usually made from wood and decorated with gems or silk flowers (Reference).
- Sakura: Sakura is the signature flower of Japan, everyone knows that this flower is identic with Japan. This flower also has a spiritual meaning, one of them is to represent the transience of life, it is a reminder to cherish every moment in life because nothing lasts forever (Reference).
- Pearls: Pearl is a symbol of purity, wisdom, and prosperity. This thing was formed within living creatures, it makes pearl very special (Reference).
After finalizing our sketch, in the next class (week 6) we showed Mr. Asrizal our design and he approved it so we could continue to make the product. In the process of our product making, Emily and Ying Ying suggested that we can make only 2 kanzashi for our project, one to represent traditional kanzashi, and one to represent modern/present kanzashi. It was a great idea and we agreed to do that, luckily our claw clip design has a minimalist and more modern look and it suits the present kanzashi, so we don't have to make new designs and continue our work. In the same week, Mr. Asrizal extended the deadline to the 8th week. But me and Lizzie have to finish the product on week 7 because we already booked a flight ticket to get back home. Emily, Ying Ying, and Velicia stay in Malaysia so they can continue with the past kanzashi.
2. PROGRESS TIMELINE & DOCUMENTATION
Tuesday, 19 March 2024: Me and Lizzie had the idea to make the cherry blossom with fabrics we bought in Osaka, but the fabric was too flowy and hard to shape, so we changed our plan by using clay as a main material to create the flower and then wrapped it with fabrics. At this meeting, we created the flowers by making the petals one by one and then glued them together.
Wednesday, 20 March 2024: We made more petals because we decided to put the flowers on both sides of the claw clip.
Thursday, 21 March 2024: We had new plans to remove the fabrics from our material because it will be hard to wrap the small petals and make them look smooth, the fabric will make it wrinkle, so we will use paint to colour the flower. This meeting was a little bit chaotic because I accidentally broke the claw clip while trying to test the quality, luckily we got another claw clip and I got super glue on my finger while trying to stick the beads. We also changed our flower model because we found it hard to stick the petals together, so we made a flower by using the petals as a pattern to make the whole flower and then cut it with a cutter.
Friday, 23 March 2024: This was our last day to finish the claw clip. We painted the clay with the paint, the reason why it took so long is because we had to wait for the clay to be completely dry. After painting the flower, we coated the flower with glue to make it glossy, once the glue dried, we started to assemble all of the elements onto the claw clip, need several tries to assemble the elements, because the surface of the claw clip is small so we have to be careful. After done glueing all the elements we're done doing the claw clip.

In progress #1 me and Lizzie had to redo all of the things because we found out that the elements we made did not work for our claw clip. The successful progress will be shown in the Progress #2 documentation below.

FEEDBACK
Week 6
- Mr Asrizal approved our sketch.
Week 7
(Started on working the project)
REFLECTION
8 weeks, was how long I have faced the struggle and the excitement. Started with good things, made new friends, and got to go to the place I have dreamed about for a long time (Japan). Honestly, going to Japan with friends was a good decision. I learnt about Japanese culture got new insights and experienced the lifestyle in Japan, everything is very convenient and accessible. But if you are facing something new, you will face challenges. In this project, everything is new to me. I have done a group project before, but it was an online lecture and I've done it smoothly. But this group project was something bigger than that, in our group we have different ideas and our job is to combine all of the ideas so we can produce the best outcome. Of course, I learnt about patience, team work, and how to find a solution. Even though this project was stressing me out, I was able to find a way to hold on until we finished this project. Shout out to all of my group mates who have done all the best for our project.
