JUMPLINK

INSTRUCTION

  1. This task requires student to assess, investigate, document and analyze the existing art/design work that have been selected by student in Task 1.  Student will study the design principles found in the selected art work, as well as the size, placement, purpose, effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG goal that have been chosen.
  2. Write a 300 - 350 words visual analysis of the selected design from Task 1.
  3. Include reference links when applicable.

LECTURES
Visual Analysis:
Method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles.
The purpose of visual analysis is to recognize the choices that a designer made in creating the design, as well as to better understand how the formal properties of a design communicate ideas, content, or meaning.

Three phase of visual analysis:
  1. Observation: By closely looking at and identifying the visual element of a design, and the important thing, before observation do not read about the design, so the observation will be pure based on your understanding.  It is basically about looking, thinking, and finding good language to communicate what we notice.
  2. Analysis: It requires us to think about the observation we did before, we also need to think about how the specific visual elements that we have identified in the artwork and the impact on the viewer.
  3. Interpretation: The final phase, it is the part where our observation, description, and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work and historical context that we find in trustworthy published sources.

TASK 2: VISUAL ANALYSIS

Fig. 1.1 The Teacher Painting
(2021)
The Teacher Painting
By Afri Setiawan
Indonesia
Painting, Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 80 W x 90 W x 4 D cm

Observation:
The Teacher Painting is a portrait painting, main focus of this artwork is the man who sits on the chair, wearing a chocolate-ish suit and black trousers. While holding a pen and a piece of paper the figure was staring to the front and smiles faintly. In this painting, we can see that the character was wearing a kopiah, a cap that is traditionally worn by male Muslims in Indonesia. In the right corner, horizontal and vertical strokes lead the viewer's vision to the abstract background of the painting giving a texture to the artwork.

Analysis:

The most stand-out feature of this painting is the colour palette, it has a very contrasting colour and unusual colour, the red skin colour and the blue combined with the white chair give contrast so the object can be seen clearly among the dark colour, it is also asymmetrically balanced, it may looks equal but if we look closer the weight on the left side is more dominating rather than the right side.  This painting also has an emphasis feature that focuses on the object and puts all of the attention on the object.

Fig. 1.3 Ki Hajar Dewantara
(5/3/2024)

Interpretation:

The Teacher Painting was made by Afri Setiawan, an artist based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Some of his artwork was inspired by Nationalist figures from Indonesia, like this one inspired by Ki Hajar Dewantara, the father of education in Indonesia. Ki Hajar Dewantara is known as the pioneer of education in Indonesia during the Dutch occupation. He built a school for every Indonesian named Taman Siswa on 3rd July 1922, so every Indonesian could get the opportunity to learn and pursue education. Because of his dedication to education in his beloved country, He is recognised as one of the Indonesian heroes and his birthday is commemorated as National Education Day every 2nd May, that is why this artwork reminds me the sustainable development goal number 4, to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

FEEDBACK

Week 5:
- For the interpretation make sure to mention the relation of the artwork with the UNSDG that has been chosen.
- The golden ration and the movement might need to be change because not related with the artwork.

REFLECTION

This task, deepened my understanding in analyzing artwork using design principles.  It is also helped me to understand more about the appliance of design principles in an artwork, especially in painting.  This task has inspired me to learn more about design.
