Illustration & Visual Narrative / Bachelor of Design (Hons) in Creative Media
Task 2: Decisive Moment
- Design Flow: Design flow is the way our eyes moves or led around the composition.
INSTRUCTION
In animation, I did not do too much, I just duplicate my illustration and move some elements. Then I bring the illustration into Photoshop and using the timeline, in this process I deleted some unused frames. I also duplicated some frames to create certain move, or make it smoother.

WEEK 6
Composition Theory 1:
Composition in design simply means that arrangement of the elements in your visual.
- The challenging part in composition is arranging the elements in our visual effectively.
- There are 4 composition visual rules:
1. Visual Narrative.
2. Visual Flow.
3. Visual Balance.
4. Visual Hierarchy.

1. Establishing.
2. Bird's Eveview.
3. Frame Within a Frame.
4. Medium Shot.
5. Close Up.
6. Worm's Eyeview.
Composition Theory 2:
The art of representing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface so as to give the right impression of their height, width, depth, and position in relation to each other.
- There are four perspectives
1. One-point perspective.
2. Two-point perspective.
3. Three-point perspective.
4. Isometric grid.

WEEK 7
Composition Theory 3:
Composition essentially refers to how your image is put together, and there are tricks you can keep in mind that, if used in the right way, can take your art to the next level and make a piece really grab your audience's attention.
- Three theories, illustrating elements of:
1. Foreground.
2. Middle-ground.
3. Background

WEEK 9
Limited Animation: Animation that uses fewer frames.
- Secondary action:
To enriches the main action and adds more dimension to the character animation, supplementing and re-enforcing the main action.

- Overlapping:
When different parts of a character move at different times to make their movements look more natural. (brush ninja)

- Follow Through:
Follow through is the principle that parts apart from the main body might continue to move even after an action is completed. (creativity school)

RESEARCH
On week 7 we were told to find article about urban legends, the articles could be local or international and the art style must be contain art deco styles. For this assignment I choose urban legend from Indonesia, it is known as 'Babi Ngepet' or 'Demon Pig' in English. Babi Ngepet is a ritual or black magic that people do to gain wealthy. According to local myth, the creature is believed to be the manifestation of a person practicing pesugihan babi black magic. Pesugihan is derived from the Javanese word sugih meaning "rich". It is a kind of magic to help people become rich instantly, but in exchange they must sacrifice something. In this case they must sacrifice their humanity; allowing themselves to be transformed into a boar for a period of time, or allowing themselves to be possessed by a boar demon. The human-animal transformation is similar to shapeshifting or the werewolf concept in the West.

MOOD BOARD
Fig. 2.2 Moodboard
In this mood board i assembled some idea that could represent 'Babi Ngepet'. Since the art style have to derived art deco, I choose some illustration to be preference for creating my characters.
SKETCH
Fig. 2.3 1st sketch
(15/11/2023)
I came up with the idea of making my 'Babi Ngepet' character is standing at the end of a tunnel with a candle in front of it, I decided to make its shadow in human form, to represent that the pig was a human that turned into a demon pig and able to get back to human form. I ask for Mr. Hafiz opinion, and he suggested to use another way to describe the idea in this poster and make the climax story.
Fig. 2.4 2nd sketch (15/11/2023)
The second trial, i used this idea to capture the story of 'Babi Ngepet'. I think that this scene is more presentable rather than the first one. I drew another characters, a woman which is the wife of 'Babi Ngepet'. Based on the article that I have read, this black magic basically is a group job, because one person have to be a pig (to go outside and steal money) and the other have to keep an eye to the candle, because when the candle seems to be shaking it means that the person who turned into a pig is likely in danger. The one who watch the candle should blow the candle so their partner could turn back into a human form and safe themself. While to execute the climatic moment, I added another figure outside, it is a stranger or a person from their neighborhood who accidentally saw the black magic practice between the 'Babi Ngepet' and his wife.
ILLUSTRATION PROCESS
The tool i use:
- Pen tool: To create the outline/tracing the sketch and make elements.
- Gradient: To create the gradient.
- Filter > Texture > Grain: To add texture
- Selection Tool: To adjust the shape.
- Draw Inside Mode: To add pattern in certain area.

FINAL RESULT

(17/11/2023)
Here is the final Outcome, I made some minor changes in this illustration that I think will fit better in the poster.
REFLECTION
Experience:
In this assignment, I get to discovered about limited animation beside the full animation. I also gain my skill in using Adobe Illustration and started to enjoy using it. I also did some research about some urban legends to deepen my understanding in this assignment, and I got to know more about them especially urban legend from my own country.
Observation:
I realized that, in doing this task I cannot procrastinate it made me rushing doing it and cannot give my best to finish the work. This work needs a lot of patient because I want to do a lot of things with it especially I have never work with art deco style before, and that makes this assignment looks difficult.
Findings:
Art deco is such a unique style, for me it looks classy and eye catching. To work with it, I need to do more research because I see that I need to improve in my skill in creating art deco style.
