LECTURES
Gutter: The space between the panels. In this space, the reader moves from one panel to the next and comes to a conclusion about what is happening (source). The gutter is essential for comics, because they are a medium that do not allow for actions to take place in real time.

Beside gutter, in comic world there is also transition, there are 6 transitions.

Fig. 1.2 Type of transitions |
Moment to moment transition is a transition that need 'little closure' (McCloud). It is one short actions like eyes closing, a cough, sneeze etc.
- ACTION TO ACTION
Transitions show a single subject progressing through a specific movement.
- SUBJECT TO SUBJECT
Transition stays within a specific scene or idea and call for more reader involvement.
- SCENE TO SCENE
Transitions take place across significant distance within time and space.
- ASPECT TO ASPECT
Shows different aspects occurring simultaneously within the same scene.
- NON SEQUITER
Provides no logical connection between panels.
INSTRUCTION
On week 10 - 11 Mr. Hafiz gave us task about transition. The instruction were:
- Review Scott McCloud's transitions: moment-to-moment, action-to-action, subject-to-subject, scene-to-scene, aspect-to-aspect.
- Select one transition type for each of the three panels: before, during (climactic turning point), and after the turning point.
- Identify specific moments or elements in the narrative that align with the chosen transitions.
- Create a digital triptych with three panels that clearly illustrate the chosen transitions.
- Use any digital medium (illustration software, graphic design tools, etc.) to craft the panels.
- Ensure coherence and narrative flow between the panels, capturing the essence of the transitions selected.
- Submit the completed digital triptych via the designated platform.
- Include a brief explanation for each panel, detailing the chosen transition and its significance in the narrative context.
- Ensure that each panel distinctly represents its respective transition type.
- Understanding and application of Scott McCloud's theory on transitions in creating the digital triptych.
- Clarity and effectiveness in using each transition to depict the sequential narrative.
- Coherence and visual storytelling across the three panels.
- Artistic execution and presentation of the digital triptych.
SKETCHES
In this particular task, I use my previous illustration as the second panel (climatic turning point). It was a story of urban legend from Indonesia called 'Babi Ngepet'. It's simply tells about a couple who are using black magic to get money and one of the person suppose to turn into a pig or babi so it can steal the money from people's house, while the other should watch the candle, so they know when their partner is in danger and they have to blow the candle to turn the pig into its human form. My illustration is telling about a husband and wife who practicing 'Babi Ngepet" but then got caught by their neighbor.

For this task, I use the scene to scene transition.
1. Before: This panel tells the first scene when the neighbor is patrolling around the village at midnight, but then he realized something strange, in one of the villagers house.
2. During: This one is the climatic turning point, where the neighbor see the couple is just started doing the ritual 'Babi Ngepet'.
3. After: The neighbor report the scene that he saw and the villagers decide to catch the couple so they will not steal money from others again. In the last panel, the husband is still in his pig form, so the wife is trying to protect him.
DIGITALIZATION

Fig. 2.2 Digitalization (8/12/2023) |
Here my documentation of my digitalization progress of my digital triptych. I made the first artboard in the previous task, so I just need to add two more as the before and the after panel.
The tool I use:
- Pen tool: To create the outline/tracing the sketch and make elements.
- Gradient: To create the gradient.
- Filter > Texture > Grain: To add texture
- Selection Tool: To adjust the shape.
- Draw Inside Mode: To add pattern in certain area.
- Distortion > Roughen: To create the bush.

These illustrations represent one of the famous urban legend in Indonesia 'Babi Ngepet', the style that I used in this task was inspired by art deco style. The story of 'Babi Ngepet' is complicated and involved a lot of scene, in order to make it precise, I put hint in the second panel, which is the pig's shadow. The pig's shadow was not in a form of a pig, but in a human form. It shows that, the pig is not a real animal but a human who can turn into an animal.
REFLECTION
Experience:
Throughout this task, I have faced some challenge, including how to turn such a complicated situation into an illustration. I have to think how to make it precise but people can understand what I'm trying to tell them. Beside the difficulties, I found something new, I learned about transitions and gutter and any kinds of art style that I have seen before but never noticed about it. One thing that makes me happy is I am able to gain my skill in using Adobe Illustration, I am pretty familiar with some feature that was hard for me to understand and apply it, I am not satisfied yet but I enjoyed the process, practice makes perfect is right.
Observation:
In this task I realized that I played too much with darker color. In the first panel, I should put a brighter texture. However, It was a lot of work and I have to manage my time to learn and practice.
Findings:
Looking at other's work made me feel kind of messed up in this assignment. I should practice more and improve my skill.
